About the Opportunity: 

Modirum | International is launching a strategic initiative to adapt our robust existing technologies for the high stakes UAV Defence sector. We are building a dedicated development team and seek an experienced Backend Lead to guide the design, development, and deployment of the server-side logic, APIs, and databases that power our defence solutions. You will lead a team of backend developers, ensuring our systems are scalable, reliable, secure, and performant. 


Your Role in the Team: 

As the Backend Lead, you are responsible for the technical direction and execution of the server-side development effort. You will: 

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of backend software developers. 
  • Architect and oversee the design and implementation of scalable, secure, and maintainable backend systems and APIs. 
  • Collaborate with the Solution Architect, Product Owner, and other team leads (AI, UX, Hardware) to define technical requirements and ensure system cohesion. 
  • Make key technical decisions regarding backend technologies, frameworks, database design, and infrastructure. 
  • Champion best practices in backend development, including coding standards, testing strategies (unit, integration), and CI/CD processes. 
  • Ensure the performance, quality, and responsiveness of backend services. 
  • Guide the team in troubleshooting complex technical issues. 
  • Participate in hands-on development, code reviews, and architectural discussions. 
  • Drive the team's output by ensuring the timely delivery of robust and efficient backend functionalities crucial for our defence applications. 


Qualifications: 

  • Proven experience leading backend development teams or significant backend projects. 
  • Extensive experience in designing, developing, and deploying complex backend systems and APIs (e.g., RESTful, gRPC). 
  • Strong proficiency in one or more backend programming languages (e.g., Java, Kotlin, Python, Node.js). 
  • Deep understanding of database technologies (SQL and NoSQL), data modeling, and query optimization. 
  • Experience with service oriented architecture, distributed systems, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP). 
  • Solid understanding of software design patterns, data structures, and algorithms. 
  • Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and CI/CD pipelines. 
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. 


Bonus Points: 

  • Experience developing backend systems for Defence, Aerospace, or security-sensitive applications. 
  • Experience adapting existing platforms for new requirements or markets. 
  • Knowledge of messaging queues (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ) and caching technologies (e.g., Redis).
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation). 
  • Security certifications or experience implementing stringent security protocols.
